“Frequent customers, last visit dissapointed”

  , Cold Lake
We have stayed at the Howard Johnson in Edmonton at least 6 times. Most recently, this prior weekend, and two weeks before that. I always book online so that I ensure a room for the weekend. We are usually satisfied, as we receive a military discount. The hotel is in the slummy part of town, the elevator has not been running for about 2+ years, and half of the rooms are not updated and therefore disgusting or dirty. I make sure to book a renovated room when I book online in advance. Usually, none of these things are too much of a detriment as we don't pay too much for the quality after military discount, and we usually get a free 10$ voucher for the restaurant in the hotel. Our most recent stay was what caused us to start looking for another regular hotel. I booked online in advance, and made sure it was for a renovated room. When we arrived, we were almost denied the military discount as "there is new ownership". We said that we had been there 2 weeks before under the new ownership, and still received the discount. After a bit of a fuss, we were given it. There was no way we were paying $100.00 per night for that location and poor quality. It is only our go-to hotel as we usually pay no more than $80 per night. Anyways, we then received our $10.00 restaurant voucher, and were told we could use it for breakfast at 8:00am the next morning. We got our room keys and went upstairs only to find that our room was gutted. Renovations had not even begun. The manager was in the hallway at this time and was able to get us into another room, even the hotel was supposedly booked full. The room we got was not the renovated room we paid for, and so he promised us a $10.00 credit. The next morning, we went downstairs at 8:30 for breakfast and checkout. We did not get to redeem our vouchers because there was nobody to open the restaurant, and the vouchers expire within 24 hours so they became unusable. There was no breakfast. Nothing continental even. Also, there were no notes on our file to give us the credit for the last minute room change to an old room. The HoJo in Edmonton was our frequent as we paid about $75 per night. This $75 put us in the slum part of town, with no working elevators, decent room, and food vouchers. This last visit has made us rethink where we should be spending our money and the quality it can get us in a hotel. Maybe it is time to find a new regular hotel.
