“Not worth the upset”

This hotel was not the best place I have ever stayed at. Upon arrival, the front lobby reeked of smoke. The only explanation is that the front desk clerk must smoke all shift for it to be that bad. The lobby was also not in tip top shape. Shabby furniture and peeling stucco was what our first impression included along with the Howard Johnson sign seen from the freeway that should have read Howard Johnson but was missing the 'S' in Johnson so instead read 'Howard John on'. Check in was a nightmare. I booked four rooms for four different families for a softball tournament. We each had a separate confirmation number. When my family checked in the clerk had no idea what happened to our confirmation number. My husband and I had to very slowly explain that there were four rooms booked under four different names and that one family had already checked in under the wrong name. He told us he didn't have any room for us. We told him to just give us the room that was for the first arriving family because they had taken ours. I'm not sure why that was so hard to solve. Our room was supposed to be a smoke free room. It stunk. Bad. I had to sleep with the air on, even though I was cold, just to get the air filtered so I could breathe. Another family in my group went to complain about the smell in their room and they were handed a bottle of Febreeze. Our shower had mold in the grout (I have pictures). Not acceptable when there are plenty of cleaning product specifically for that problem. Carpets in all rooms were well worn and stained. TV's are very outdated. Bedspread had stuck on food (I have pictures). Bed box spring in two of the four rooms were not acceptable. Torn, stained and exposed springs are not OK. The quality of the pool was moderate to fair and the Jacuzzi looked just gross. My girls wanted to go in it and there was just no way I was allowing it. Appearance is pretty high and this property needs a makeover. I think the Howard Johnson name was pretty reputable and for the price I was expecting a little more.
