The Howard Johnson is probably what you'd expect to get for a pretty moderate price. I was surprised to find that they didn't offer a complimentary breakfast of some kind, but otherwise they met my needs.Upon checking in, I discovered that my room had some issues -- the bathtub faucet constantly trickled, the toilet would run after being flushed, the florescent light above the bathroom flickered enough to give me a headache, etc. There were enough inconveniences that, while each minor on their own, combined were enough to make me request a different room for my two-night stay. The hotel staff obliged kindly and my second room was much better.The cable TV was on the fritz during my stay as well, with poor reception for much of the first evening. Also, in my second room, the light over the bathroom sink was very dim, and the remote control for the television didn't work and had to be replaced/re-synced to the TV. Finally, in a very odd set of circumstances, I was locked out of my room at one point because the safety latch swung closed when I left the room (probably due in part to a loose latch and in part to the flimsy exterior walls); an employee was eventually able to let me back in. Props to front desk worker Cody for all his help during that first afternoon!The rooms themselves were fine -- mostly clean and neat. The beds were certainly in good shape, but overall the rooms could use a little TLC. The doors (which were exterior doors) in both of the rooms I was in had quite a gap between the bottom of the door and the floor itself; I found myself using a towel to stop up the gap to keep night air and bugs from coming in.My final morning, I wanted to request a late check-out due to my business/travel schedule that day. After trying to reach the front desk by phone for over an hour (4 or 5 call attempts during that time) I finally just packed up my things to check out; I discovered that the front desk worker that morning had been sitting in the on-site restaurant instead of manning the desk; he only came out to help me when he saw me walk up.All of the issues aside, the room was comfortable and functional. Given that most of the hotels in Hot Springs are overpriced because it's a "resort town," the Howard Johnson was probably the best blend of comfort/service/amenities for the price I was willing to pay. That said, I've stayed in better hotels for less money elsewhere, and I probably would an extra $10-$20/night for a different hotel next time. « less
