“It's a fine hotel at the right price.”

My wife and i stayed at HOJO in Mystic for a night but decided not to stay for a second booked night. Here is why. The Good - The front desk clerk was great. She was helpful, attentive and accommodating. The hotel was clean, folks. Don't buy the crap that it is a dirty hotel that stinks and has crawlies all over the place. My wife and I are anal about cleanliness, and we check for bugs, dust, dirt, mold, and other unwanted attributes at every hotel we stay in. We found NONE of the things that can turn a vacation into the trip from Hell. AGAIN, the housekeeping staff should be praised for doing a very good job in maintaining the rooms. The hallway did have that old hotel smell, but that is what this hotel is, an old one. The small patios were great to sit and smoke, if you are a smoker, or just to get some fresh air. The HOJO is central to many of the Mystic attractions, but I personally didn't find them so close as to walk to them, but you can. THE BAD: The bad with this hotel is the decor, for one. It is a bit drab and the wear on the furniture is evident. The TV is the old version box type but at least you do get cable. Another bad is that the bathroom is tiny, very constrictive, and even has the second basin that lies outside the bathroom. The hotel has no elevator, folks, so if you happen to be on the second floor and have allot of baggage, good luck. The hotel will get someone to help you with the bags, but that in my opinion is a pain in the butt. They don't have Bell Service, so travel light or get a room on the ground floor. Now for the UGLY: Do NOT stay on the side of the hotel backing into the highway and/or parking lot to the diner. The location of these rooms are terrible. Trucks exiting the highway can get loud especially when they hit that bump that makes them rattle and screech as if they are falling apart. Car traffic is audible but bearable, but not the trucks. The other nuisance is the diner's parking lot. Any activity that happens behind the diner, chances are you'll hear it in your room if you get one that is directly behind it. Unfortunately, the hotel can't rearrange the hotel so I did make a suggestion to the front desk clerk; wall in the entire back side of the hotel and add double paned windows for light. Skip the patio. Price point: $60 - $80 per night even during season. More than that and you are over paying. Stay clear of highway side rooms unless heavily discounted.
