“Not as scarey a stay as it first seems but that doesn't mean it's good.”

  , Santa Rosa
Not that this is a dangerous hotel to stay at and the location is just at the edge of downtown so it's pretty convenient but there's plenty of room for improvement. Apparently three floors of the hotel are rented out the the nearby university as dorm overflow so the hotel has a real "college dorm" feel. There are students hanging around at all hours of the day and night in the lobby, in the parking lot and at the hotel bar. When the hotel elevator doors open on the "dorm floors" it looks like absolute chaos with trash piled high in the hallways. Only two of the three elevators are in working order and one of those is a pretty harrowing ride. I'm sure it's perfectly safe (at least I hope so) but the way the elevator pauses, shudders, shimmies and shakes got a lot of nervous looks from hotel guests and a lot of knowing chuckles from the long-term dorm residents. The physical plant is long overdue for an overhaul. The rooms are dated, the furniture feels old and worn and the fixtures (both plumbing and electrical) have seen better days. The windows are single-pane in old aluminum frames which means all the outdoor noise comes into the room easily. The hotel sits right across the street from the performing arts center which means when the performances get out at 10:30 PM all the noise and chaos from the streets below transfer right into the rooms (even on the higher floors). Know that there's a train that passes through town somewhere after 11:00 PM every night and it seems to blow its horn nearly continuously for ten minutes as it slowly rumbles through. I have no idea how far away it really is but it sounds like it's in the parking lot.Sound insulation between rooms is hardly any better. I had to suppress the urge to say "Bless You" when the visitor in the next room sneezed. It was cold season so that was often. Conversations held in the neighboring room's bathroom could be clearly heard through the vent system and when the drunk guests returned to their room at 1:30 in the morning you could clearly hear the loud conversation as they slowly helped their buddy down the hallway. The staff was fine - helpful and efficient when I needed them. The food at the in-hotel "restaurant" was surprising good considering that it was just the bar menu. The bar was again a dark and scary place with very dated fixtures, a painted concrete floor and practically no lighting.
