“Disappointing visit- not up to Howard Johnson standards”

  , Marietta
I booked this hotel in September 2012 for a visit in May 9-11th to attend graduation events at UGA. Because I booked early- I received a great rate of $53.99 for two nights. I was told on the phone I could check in at noon on May 9th. When I arrived at noon, I was told that I could not check in until after 3pm. The desk clerk also commented that I had an excellent rate- the rooms were now going for over $170.00. When I came back later after attending graduation events, I was dropped off by a friend, it was around 7pm. The room I was given- was way at the back of the hotel. The asphalt had just been resurfaced that day- so there was a terrible odor. The room was clean but generally- shabby- bleach stains on the comforter, repair patches on the carpet and the furniture was very battered and worn out looking. I took photos on my cell phone. I also noticed a lot of workmen's trucks in the parking lot which concerned me because I thought that they would be heading out early to go to work. I called the front desk to see about being moved to another room- I did not hear back for 10 minutes and called again. She was still working on finding another room. As I was a middle aged woman traveling alone, and had been dropped off and did not have a car- I decided that I was going to attract too much attention to be moving my belongings from one part of the hotel to the another since you had to walk outside. I ended up staying in that room. I am not accustomed to traveling alone so I was feeling nervous. I had to take a towel and stuff it in the gap at the top of the door to stop the asphalt smell coming into the room. At 6am the next morning, I was woken up by the sound of the workmen's trucks leaving to go to work. I was very disappointed that I was even given that room in the first place. The room did not resemble the photos seen on their website. I think I was given this room because of the low rate I had obtained by booking early. I ended up just storing my items in the room when I was picked up the next day to attend graduation events. My husband was to join me the second night. When he saw the room, we decided to just go home and arrived home after midnight. I paid for the two nights although I only stayed one night.
