“Not so smoke free room”

We had a bad start to our stay. Our room key- on the top floor- no elevator- did not work. After walking down the steps and all the way to the front, the young man fixed the key but with not one word of so sorry for your inconvenience, etc. Just looked at me, handed me the card and said here it is. When we entered our non smoking room we were almost choked by the smell. No way the maid did not know this room had been smoked in by a previous customer. The breakfast bar was not compatible with our diabetic needs of protein/low carb. When we told the lady at checkout about our room she asked me to wait until she found someone (can't remember the title) That person couldn't be found. Finally she said she would make a note of the non smoking room issue but still no- I'm sorry, etc. At the end, she told us the manager would contact us the next day and would issue us a refund. It is now several days past that and no response from the manager. The hotel is in a good location and I'm sure that during the race season you may not care who smokes in your room but those of us with lung/breathing issues expect a non-smoking room to be just what it says. One where there has not been any smoke. Since there are several hotel choices in that area, I probably would not choose to stay at this Howard Johnson's again.
