“Don't Stay Here!”

  , Stoughton
I travel to Amherst every fall for UMASS Homecoming Weekend. I decided to try this hotel because the rates were lower than the Campus Center Hotel and there was no availability at Holiday Inn Express, both of which I have stayed at and have positive things to say. But Howard Johnson's was absolutely the WORST place ever. The lobby is renovated and clean, but as soon as we entered the room on the 3rd floor, I thought I was back in the '60's! The room was so old and filthy. Nothing has been changed or updated since then. The inside of the toilet bowl hadn't ever seen a scrub brush in years, as well as the matching dirty mildew tiles in the tub area, with scratches and pieces of porcelain missing from the tub wall. The tiny sink and old, brown laminated "wooden" bathroom counter top had some spilled white paint (or maybe nail polish) on it. No tile on the bathroom floor, just the oldest, stained and cracked piece of laminate! The carpeting in the room was stained in several places. I don't want to think about the few large brown spots on the carpet leading to the bathroom and the red spot on the carpet next to one of the beds. Did I mention there was a balcony? The cement floor was decorated in graffiti written in chalk, along with some dirty DD coffee cups filled with cigarette butts! Oh, and when we went to open the sliding glass door, there was an insect web in the corner of the door inside the room, with two dead bugs attached. I am NOT exaggerating when I say that we could only get two TV channels and the rest was all snow. Internet service was off and on and so slow when you could get it. Other guests were complaining to the front desk about this also. The pillows were horrible. There was a dog across the hall howling all night long, and you could hear voices through the wall next door to you! We were booked for 2 nights, but cancelled the 2nd night. We couldn't wait to get out of this dump that cost me an outrageous $160.00 for one night. Thank G-d the Campus Center Hotel had a room for us and was well worth the extra $40. Also, the front desk told us that management was not there over the weekend. They had no recourse since there were no other rooms available (hotel was already over booked due to the busy weekend), but did nothing to compensate me in any way. I have yet to follow up with management, but plan to email or call the hotel manager. Stay anywhere but here!
