“The Howard Johnson in Salem, VA is a place to pass on...”

  , Great Falls
The Howard Johnson in Salem, VA is a place to pass on. Room: dirty carpet, torn carpet at the bath room, room smelled mildewed, sink counter falling off the wall. Bathroom flooring peeling up. Booked directly with the 800 number and with AAA, got a rate of $99. Charged $120 at the hotel and the clerks (evening shift and day manager) would not change the price. It was a bait-and-switch. Tried to change to a "better" room, and were told the only rooms they had were on the back of the hotel, where we were. Implication: all the rooms were similarly nasty. "Breakfast" consisted of almost nothing truly edible... thawed waffles and biscuits, bagels, packets of oatmeal. No real eggs, no meat, no yoghurt, a total of two apples and no other fruit. For a person with wheat intolerance, there was essentially nothing to eat.
