“Looked good from the outside.”

On Thursday, Oct 11th, at 5 pm, I went to the Howard Johnson Airport Cleveland Hotel. I was checked in and given a card key to a room on the first floor. Upon entering the room, the musky smell and general conditions of ther room were not acceptable to me, so I returned to the front desk and explained that I did not want to stay in that room. The desk clerk said "I'm sorry, but there are no refunds!" I questioned the no refunds policy, as I had not even slept in the room. She offered me another room and gave me the card key to a room on the 2nd floor. The first thing I noticed was the door frame was bent and there was a large gap between the door and the locking system, indicating that there had been force entry. The door to the next room was in similar condition with a bent frame as well. I came to a quick conclusion that I was not going to put my safety at risk and stay in this hotel overnight. I found a room in another hotel that met my standards. After finding new accomodations, I returned to check out from Howard Johnson Airport Hotel and asked the front desk clerk to process my check out and give me my receipt. She asked me if there was a problem and I told her about the door frame being bent and that I thought it looked like someone and used a crowbar to open the door She told me she was sorry but that it was all they could offer. When I left the hotel I questioned how this hotel met the Howard Johnson hotel chain standards . I am a frequent traveller and have not had an experience like this in any other hotel chain.
